¡O No, Lo Volví a Hacer!

Hace algunos años, hice algo sumamente tonto. Sin embargo, no fue la primera vez que había vuelto a cometer el mismo descuido. Esa mañana tenía una reunión con mi compañero peruano más cercano en la obra. Para ir de nuestro departamento a la iglesia donde él era pastor requería viajar en una de las autopistas más transitadas de Lima, Perú. En esta carretera se requiere andar con las luces del vehículo encendidas, o tener la posibilidad de ser multado. Pero, la clave es recordar a apagar las luces al llegar a su destino final. Al terminar la reunión descubrí que la batería del vehículo estaba sin carga. Me había olvidado a apagar las luces. El problema era que por lo menos en otras dos ocasiones yo había cometido el mismo error. ¿Por qué no podía recordar hacer algo tan simple como apagar las luces del automóvil?

Al ponerme a pensar en lo que sucedió en esa mañana, me lleva a la reflexión. ¿Cuántas veces he vuelto a cometer los mismos errores? Mi mente hace un viaje a situaciones del pasado. Recuerdo cuando he dicho cosas que hieren, o he criticado otras personas sin derecho de hacerlo. La memoria también trae la recolección de las numerosas veces cuando he caído en la trampa de comer demasiado al servirme en un bufet. Estas dos cosas solo representan las muchas veces y muchas maneras que he tenido los patrones de cometer los mismos errores o cometer los mismos pecados. En cada uno de estos casos yo recuerdo mis fracasos pasados y me digo que no voy a volver a cometer el mismo error o caer en el mismo pecado. Pero con tanta frecuencia, me encuentro en el mismo lugar dónde comencé; lo he vuelto a hacer.

Sin embargo, no creo que tenga que ser así. Estoy convencido que puedo aprender de mis previos errores y pecados, cambiar mis patrones y encontrar la victoria. El Apóstol Pablo expresó una lucha similar pero también declaró la fuente de su victoria: “²⁴ ¡Miserable de mí! ¿quién me librará de este cuerpo de muerte? ²⁵ Gracias doy a Dios, por Jesucristo Señor nuestro” Romanos 7:24-25a Reina Valera 60 (RV 60).  Confrontado con el dilema, ¿cómo puedo hacerme dueño de la victoria?

Antes de todo, es de alta importancia no permitirme estar cómodo con patrones de fracaso espiritual o con continuar a cometer los mismos errores.  Necesito pedirle al Señor a hacerme acuerdo del dolor que siento cuando caigo en las mismas trampas espirituales y las consecuencias que vienen como resultado. Es esencial que le confiese mi pecado y que le pida a no permitir que tal pecado domine en mi vida. Cuando ando en una autopista espero que recuerdo todo lo que he sufrido cuando me he olvidado a apagar las luces del vehículo. Cuando soy tentado a hablar mal de una persona, espero que el dolor que tales palabras causan venga a la mente, o a acercarme a la línea del bufet que haya la memoria de la incomodidad experimentada como resulta de la glotonería.

Otro paso para tener victoria sobre mis patrones de fracaso es hacerles caso a las advertencias. Cuando entré el sector de la ciudad donde vive mi colega peruano recordé que las luces del auto estaban encendidas. Pero, razonaba que las apagaría un poco más avanzado en el camino. ¿Cuántas veces he escuchado a alguien criticar a otra persona y en vez de suavemente llamarle la atención a la impropiedad de su crítica o por lo menos mantener silencio, he añadido mi propio comentario negativo? El mismo hecho de que otros están criticando debe advertirme a no hacer comentarios negativos de otros. En la próxima oportunidad que veo numerosas selecciones en la línea del bufet, que lo considere como una advertencia y escoger con cuidado lo que elijo para comer, y así evitar caer en la trampa de comer demasiado.

Una última manera para evitar cometer mis errores del pasado es revisitar los tiempos cuando sí he experimentado la victoria.  Sí ha habido momentos cuando he recordado a apagar las luces. Ha habido ocasiones cuando he sido sensible a la voz apacible de cautela y he abstenido de criticar o hacer comentarios negativos de otra persona. También, en situaciones cuando he tenido la oportunidad de caer en el pecado de glotonería he elegido a servirme porciones razonables. Tales momentos traen motivo de celebración. Me hacen recordar la fidelidad del Señor y que, en Cristo, de veras, puedo experimentar la victoria. La próxima vez que viajé en esa autopista en Lima recordé apagar las luces del auto. Si escuchó usted una fuerte aleluya, fue mi grito de celebración.

O No, I Did It Again!

A few years ago, I did something really dumb. However, it is not the first time I had done the same careless thing.  That morning I had a meeting with my closest national partner.  To go from our apartment to the church where he is pastor requires traveling on one of the principal freeways in Lima, Perú.  On the freeway it is required to run with the lights of the vehicle turned on or face the possibility of receiving a traffic ticket.  However, the key is to remember to turn off the lights when you arrive at your destination.  When the meeting ended and I attempted to start the van I discovered the battery was down.  I had forgotten to turn off the lights.  The problem is that on at least two other occasions I had done the same thing.  Why could I not remember something so simple as to turn off the lights of the van?

As I think about what happened that particular morning it encourages me to reflect.  How many times have I repeated the same mistakes?  My mind travels to situations in the past.  I remember when I have said hurtful things or unduly criticized other people.  Memory also brings the recollection of the numerous times I have fallen into the trap of eating too much when I go through a buffet line.  These only represent many times and ways that I have had patterns of repeating the same mistakes or committing the same sins. In each one of these cases I remember my past failures and tell myself that I am not going to make the same error or commit the same sin again.  But so often, I find myself right back where I started; I have done it again.

However, I don’t believe it has to be that way.  I am convinced I can learn from past mistakes and sins, change my patterns and find victory.  The Apostle Paul expressed a similar struggle but also declared his source of victory: “Wretched man that I am!  Who will deliver me from this body of death?  Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!” Romans 7:24-25a ESV.  Confronted with my dilemma, how can I appropriate the victory in Jesus Christ my Lord?

First of all, it is of vital importance to not allow myself to get comfortable with patterns of spiritual failure or with committing the same mistakes.  I need to ask the Lord to remind me of the pain I feel when I fall into the same spiritual traps and the consequences that come as a result.  It is essential that I confess my sin to the Lord and ask Him to not allow that sin to dominate in my life. When I get out on the freeway and must turn on the lights hopefully I will remember all that I have had to go through when I have forgotten to turn off the lights upon arrival at my destination.  When I am tempted to speak unkindly to or about another person may the pain such words cause come to mind, or upon approaching the buffet line may there be a memory of the extremely uncomfortable feeling that I have experienced by overeating. 

Another step to victory over my patterns of failure is to heed warnings.  When I turned to enter the part of the city where my national colleague lives I remembered the lights of the vehicle were on.  However, I reasoned that I would turn them off just a little farther down the road. How many times have I heard others criticize someone and instead of politely bringing out the inappropriateness of the criticism or at least remaining silent, have I added my own negative assessment?  The very fact that others have criticized should be my warning to not comment negatively of others, but to only speak that which is helpful to build others up.  The next opportunity I have to see the large number of selections in the buffet line may I consider it a warning and think with care about what I choose and not fall into the trap of overeating.

A final way to avoid committing my past errors is to revisit the times I have experienced victory.  I have remembered to turn off the lights.  There have been moments when I have been sensitive to the Master’s still small voice of caution and refrained from criticism or hurtful comments about others.  In situations when the food choices have been numerous and appealing I have exercised restraint.  Such times are motives for celebration.  They remind me of the Lord’s faithfulness and that in Christ there can indeed be victory.  The next time I traveled on this particular Lima Freeway I remembered to turn off the lights   If you heard a loud hallelujah, it was my shout of celebration.

The Blessing of a Daily Meeting With the Lord

At the age of nineteen God graciously led me to begin a spiritual discipline which has proven to be the foundation of my daily walk with Him. The Daily Quiet Time, a time of reading and meditating on the Word of God and spending time in prayer, has helped me grow in my intimacy with the Lord Jesus and given me strength to face the many challenges in life. I cannot imagine the empty space that would be in my life if I did not have this time each morning to meet with my Lord.

Hudson Taylor, the founder of the China Inland Mission, is one of my missionary heroes. Brother Taylor was used by the Lord to develop a powerful missionary force to impact inland China with the Gospel. The following testimony gives insight to how he was able to maintain a close relationship with Christ that resulted in such a fruitful ministry. In April 1905, at the age of 73, Hudson Taylor made his last trip to China. Su esposa Jennie había fallecido, y él había pasado el invierno en Suecia. His second wife Jennie had passed away, and he had spent the winter in Sweden. Su hijo Howard, que era médico, acompañado de su esposa, decidieron acompañar a Taylor en este viaje. His son Howard, who was a doctor, joined by his wife, decided to accompany Taylor on this trip. Al llegar a Shangai, él visitó el cementerio de Yangchtow, donde estaba sepultada su esposa María y cuatro de sus hijos. Upon arriving in Shanghai, Hudson Taylor visited the Yangchtow Cemetery, where his first wife Maria and four of his children were buried.

While touring the Chinese cities, Howard could see the great love that everyone expressed to his father, and also discovered the secret of his fruitful spiritual life. Para Taylor, el secreto estaba en mantener la comunión con Dios diaria y momentáneamente. For Taylor, the secret was to maintain communion with God both daily and momentarily. Y esto se podía lograr únicamente por medio de la oración secreta y el alimentarse de la Palabra. And this could be achieved only through secret prayer and feeding himself on the Word of God. Pero ¿cómo obtener el tiempo necesario para estos dos ejercicios espirituales? But how is it possible to get the necessary time for these two spiritual exercises? «A menudo, cuando tanto los viajeros como los portadores chinos habían de pasar la noche en un solo cuarto (en las humildes posadas chinas), se tendían unas cortinas para proveer un rincón aislado para nuestro padre, y otro para nosotros. This question can be answered by the example of Hudson Taylor.

Often, during this final trip to China Taylor, his son and his wife, and their Chinese porters had to spend the night in a single room in one of the humble Chinese inns. Curtains were hung to provide an isolated corner for Brother Taylor and another for his son and his wife. From two to four in the morning was the time he generally devoted to his devotional exercise – the time when he could be sure that there would be no interruption in his communion with God. Esa lucecita de vela ha sido más significativa para nosotros que todo lo que hemos leído u oído acerca de la oración secreta;That candlelight was more meaningful to the accompanying group than anything they had read or heard about secret prayer.esto significaba una realidad – no la prédica, sino la práctica». This demonstrated reality – not just preaching but practice.[i] In spite of having to face great challenges Hudson Taylor was able to make great impact for the glory of God through his life and ministry. Everything flowed out of his intimate relationship with the Lord Jesus. Such intimacy was fueled by the time he spent with his Lord in the Word of God and prayer.

Certainly, my life and ministry have been very different from that of Hudson Taylor. But I have been greatly blessed to enjoy an intimacy with the Lord Jesus which can only be explained as His gracious gift to me. It is my conviction that the time I spend each day with Him in His word and in prayer open my life to that closeness and help prepare me to daily live out my faith. My prayer is that each of you discover the riches that come from daily meeting with the Living Christ through reading and meditating on His Word and spending time with Him in prayer and that your life will be increasingly fruitful for His glory.

La Bendición de un Encuentro Diario con el Señor

A La edad de los diecinueve años Dios por Su gracia me guío a comenzar una disciplina espiritual que ha resultado en ser la base para mi andar diario con Él. El Tiempo Devocional Diario, un tiempo de leer y meditar en la Palabra de Dios y pasar tiempo en la oración, me ha ayudado a crecer en intimidad con el Señor Jesús y me ha dado la fortaleza para enfrentar los múltiples desafíos de la vida. No puedo imaginar el espacio vacío que habría si no dedicara este tiempo cada mañana para encontrarme con el Señor.

Hudson Taylor, el fundador de la Misión al Interior de China, es uno de mis héroes misioneros. Hermano Taylor fue usado por el Señor para crear una fuerza misionera poderosa para impactar el interior de China con el Evangelio. El siguiente testimonio nos hace entender cómo él podía mantener una relación cercana con Cristo que resultó en un ministerio tan fructífero.  En abril de 1905, a la edad de 73 años, Taylor hizo su último viaje a China. Su segunda esposa Jennie había fallecido, y él había pasado el invierno en Suecia. Su hijo Howard, que era médico, junto con su esposa, decidieron acompañar a Taylor en este viaje. Esa lucecita de vela había sido más significativa para el grupo acompañante que todo lo que habían leído u oído acerca de la oración secreta; esto significaba una realidad – no la prédica, sino la práctica.[ii] A pesar de tener que enfrentar grandes desafíos en la vida Hudson Taylor pudo hacer un gran impacto para la gloria de Dios por medio de su vida y ministerio. Todo fluyó de su relación íntima con el Señor Jesús. Esa relación cercana con Dios recibió su ímpetu del tiempo que él pasó con su Señor en la Palabra de Dios y la oración.

Por cierto, mi vida y ministerio han sido muy diferentes de la vida y ministerio de Hudson Taylor. Pero yo he sido grandemente bendecido en poder disfrutar de una intimidad con el Señor Jesús que solo puede explicarse cómo su don de gracia a mi vida. Es mi convicción que el tiempo que paso cada día con Él en Su Palabra y en la oración abre mi vida a tal relación cercana con el Señor y ayuda a prepararme a andar por fe cada día. Mi oración es que cada uno de ustedes descubra las riquezas que vienen de un encuentro diario con el Cristo Viviente por medio de leer y meditar en Su Palabra y pasar tiempo con Él en la oración y que su vida sea cada día más fructífera para Su gloria.

True Greatness

^“43 But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, ⁴⁴ and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. ⁴⁵ For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” Mark 10:43-45 English Standard Version (ESV).

What does it mean to be truly great? The desire for greatness is an aspiration that drives many people. This is true of people all over the world and has been the case throughout the history of mankind. It becomes a problem area because of what many persons believe constitutes true greatness. Some seek greatness by striving to high position, by accumulating wealth, or by noteworthy accomplishment. For many of us, it might simply be the desire to be a great doctor, artist, musician, athlete, or to excel at our job. The desire to be great motivates people to work hard, and even at times to employ improper means to attain greatness in society. Such a desire for greatness is not just an issue with those who do not profess faith in Christ: it also exists with those who identify as believers in Christ

The closest followers of the Lord Jesus also struggled with understanding the meaning of true greatness. James and John approached Jesus and asked Him to grant them the privilege to sit one at His right hand and the other at His left hand in His glory. Such privileged seating would indicate a very high level of importance and would show them to be great in the Master’s estimation. Jesus explained that it was not His request to grant and that such a place of privilege could only be given to those for whom it had been prepared. When the other ten disciples heard of the request made by James and John they became indignant. Jesus called the twelve to Himself and explained that in the unbelieving world greatness is seen in having great authority and in exercising control over other people. He went on to tell them that he who would be great among them must be their servant; and the one who would be first among them must be slave of all. Jesus then gave understanding to the definition of true greatness by sharing the example of His own life: “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many” Mark 10:45 English Standard Version (ESV).

Three notable principles can be seen in the declaration of Jesus that give us insight into the meaning of true greatness. First, true greatness is demonstrated by choosing to serve rather than to be served. The Master said that He did not come to be served but to serve. The very nature of who He was gave Him the right to be the recipient of the service of others. But He had a completely different life orientation. His focus was not to receive but to give. What is my life orientation? Am I more interested in giving or in receiving? What is your life orientation?

Second, true greatness is demonstrated by concrete action on behalf of others. Jesus came to earth with a specific purpose, and He acted to fulfill that purpose. The destiny of the Lord Jesus was the cross. His death had a purpose. He died on the cross on behalf of sinful mankind. My service must be shown by concrete action, but that action needs to be on behalf of others. Is your service shown by action on behalf of others?

Third, true greatness is demonstrated by the willingness to pay a high price to accomplish a noble purpose. Jesus paid a cost that is beyond human comprehension in order to provide for the salvation of those who put their faith in Him. It is essential that my life has a noble purpose. For me that noble purpose is to serve others in the name of Christ. But if I follow the example of the Lord Jesus I must be willing to deny myself and serve others even at great cost, whatever that cost may be. The call to selfless service is a constant challenge for me. Are you willing to follow the example of the Lord Jesus to serve others even at great cost?

True greatness has been perfectly demonstrated in the life and sacrificial death of the Lord Jesus. We are called to follow His example of redemptive servanthood. Pray with me that our Lord will grant us grace to give our lives away in unselfish service on behalf of others.

La Verdadera Grandeza

¿Qué significa ser verdaderamente grandioso? El deseo para la grandeza es una aspiración que impulsa a muchas personas. Esto es cierto para la gente de todo el mundo y ha sido el caso a lo largo de la historia de la humanidad. Se convierte en un área problemática debido a lo que muchas personas creen constituye la verdadera grandeza. Algunos buscan la grandeza por esforzarse a obtener una alta posición, acumular la abundancia económica, o por algún logro significativo. Para muchos de nosotros la grandeza podría ser simplemente el deseo de ser un gran médico, artista, músico, atleta, o para sobresalir en nuestro trabajo. El deseo de ser grande motiva a la gente a trabajar duro, e incluso a veces a emplear medios inadecuados para alcanzar la grandeza en la sociedad. Tal deseo de grandeza no es sólo un problema con los no profesan fe en Cristo; también existe con los se identifican como creyentes en Cristo.

Los seguidores más cercanos del Señor Jesús también lucharon con entender el significado de la verdadera grandeza. Santiago y Juan se acercaron a Jesús y le pidieron que les otorgara el privilegio de sentarse el uno a su mano derecha y el otro a su mano izquierda en Su gloria. Tales asientos privilegiados indicarían un nivel muy alto de importancia y demostraría que eran grandes en la estimación del Maestro. Jesús explicó que no era su solicitud de conceder y que tal lugar de privilegio sólo podría darse a aquellos para los que había sido preparado. Cuando los otros diez discípulos oyeron de la petición hecha por Santiago y Juan se indignaron. Jesús llamó a los doce a Su lado y explicó que en el mundo no creyente la grandeza se veía en tener una gran autoridad y en ejercer el control sobre otras personas. Él continuaba a decirles que el que sería grande entre ellos debería ser su siervo; y el que sería el primero entre ellos debería hacerse esclavo de todos. Jesús entonces dio entendimiento a la definición de la grandeza verdadera compartiendo el ejemplo de su propia vida: “Porque ni siquiera el Hijo del Hombre vino para ser servido, sino para servir y para dar su vida en rescate por muchos” Marcos 10:43-45 Reina Valera Contemporánea (RVC).

Tres principios notables se pueden ver en la declaración de Jesús que nos dan una visión de lo que es el significado de la verdadera grandeza. Primero, la verdadera grandeza se demuestra por elegir servir en vez de ser servido. El Maestro dijo que Él no vino para ser servido sino a servir. La naturaleza misma de quien Jesús era le dio el derecho a ser el recipiente del servicio de los demás. Pero Él tenía una orientación de vida completamente distinta. Su enfoque no era recibir sino dar. ¿Cuál es mi orientación de vida? ¿Estoy más interesado en dar o en recibir? ¿Cuál es lo que más le motiva a usted en la vida?

En segundo lugar, la verdadera grandeza se demuestra por acción concreta a favor de otros. Jesús vino a la tierra con un propósito específico, y actuó para cumplir con ese propósito. El destino del Señor Jesús era la Cruz. Su muerte tenía un propósito. Jesús murió en la Cruz a favor de la humanidad pecaminosa. Mi servicio debe demostrarse por acciones concretas, pero tal acción debe ser en beneficio de otros. ¿Es el servicio suyo demostrado por acciones a favor de otros?

Tercero, la verdadera grandeza está demostrada por la voluntad de pagar un alto precio para cumplir con un propósito noble. Jesús pagó un costo que está más allá de la comprensión humana con el fin de proveer la salvación de aquellos que pongan su fe en Él. Es esencial que mi vida tenga un propósito noble. Para mí ese propósito noble es servir a los demás en el nombre de Cristo. Pero si sigo el ejemplo del Señor Jesús, debo estar dispuesto a negarme a mí mismo y a servir a los demás incluso a un gran costo, cueste lo que cueste. El llamado al servicio desinteresado es un desafío constante para mí. ¿Está dispuesto usted  a seguir el ejemplo del Señor Jesús para servir a los demás, incluso a un gran costo?

Lessons We Learn from Reading the New Testament

There is so much to learn as we read the pages of the New Testament. The truths contained in the twenty-seven Books of the New Testament are many and profound. However, I believe there are some basic observations that we can make as we consider the New Testament as a whole. In this article I present five compelling lessons that we learn from reading these twenty-seven wonderful Books from the Word of God.

1. It is hard to be a Christian. Following Christ brought severe persecution and often death to the early followers of Christ. Let us fast forward to 2023. Things have not really changed all that much. It is still hard to be a Christian. We as Christians live in a hostile environment.  We must be willing to pay a price to follow our Master. The Apostle Peter knew what it was to suffer for the Name of Christ. He wrote these words to Christian Believers who were scattered in different places because of their faith in Christ. Let us also be encouraged and challenged by his words: “¹⁴ If you are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you.^[a] On their part He is blasphemed, but on your part He is glorified. ¹⁵ But let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or as a busybody in other people’s matters. ¹⁶ Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this matter”1 Peter 4:14-16 New King James Version (NKJV). 

• That which gives Christians identity is Christ Himself. He and the salvation in Him gave both a reason for living and confidence in the face of death to the first century Christians. This truth is spoken by the Apostle Paul himself and reminds us of our place in Christ: “If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. ² Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. ³ For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. ⁴ When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory” Colossians 3:1-4 New King James Version (NKJV).

• Believers gain courage and strength to remain faithful to the Lord Jesus as they draw together in community. The writer of the Book of Hebrews reminded persecuted Believers of their need of each other and calls us to also draw strength from our Brothers and Sisters in Christ: “²³ Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. ²⁴ And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, ²⁵ not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching” Hebrews 10:23-25 New King James Version (NKJV).

• Our power to overcome and to make an impact in the world in which we live is love. The night before His crucifixion Jesus gave His Disciples a New Commandment. This Commandment also stays true for us in 2023: “³⁴ A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. ³⁵ By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another” John 13:34-35 New King James Version (NKJV).

• As Believers we discover the glorious reality that there is no way for us to lose. For the first century Christians to live was Christ and to die was gain. Paul knew his life had purpose no matter the suffering he had to endure, but he also knew that a glorious eternity awaited him in heaven in the presence of Christ Himself. From a Roman prison he wrote these words to the Philippian Christians: “ For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. ²² But if I live on in the flesh, this will mean fruit from my labor; yet what I shall choose I cannot tell. ²³ For^[a] I am hard-pressed between the two, having a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better.” Philippians 1:21-23 New King James Version (NKJV). May these words of the Apostle Paul remind us that in Christ we can face both the present and future with confidence. Remember in Christ we cannot lose: “ For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain” Philippians 1:21 New King James Version (NKJV).

As we consider these important truths, how should we respond? Our conduct should be worthy of the Gospel of Christ so that those who observe our lives might see a clear testimony that would point them to the Lord Jesus.  We need to also join together in unity with other believers, striving together for the spread of the Gospel. Neither should we in any way be afraid of our adversaries but rather be encouraged by the presence of our trustworthy Lord and our assurance of a glorious life with Him for all eternity. We certainly will be called on to face difficult times as we walk with the Lord Jesus, but we know the greater is He that is in us than He that is in the world. The same Lord that sustained and empowered the Christians of the first century sustains and empowers us as we walk with the Lord Jesus in 2023.

Hay tanto que aprender mientras que leemos las páginas del Nuevo Testamento. Las verdades contenidas en las veintisiete Libros del Nuevo Testamento son numerosas y profundas. Sin embargo, creo que hay algunas observaciones básicas que podemos hacer en considerar el Nuevo Testamento como una entidad completa. En este artículo presento cinco lecciones cautivadoras que aprendemos en leer estos veintisiete maravillosos Libros de la Palabra de Dios.

1. Es difícil ser cristiano. Como resultado de seguir a Cristo los primeros cristianos sufrieron severa persecución y a menudo la muerte. Avancemos rápidamente hasta 2023. Las cosas realmente no han cambiado mucho. Todavía es difícil ser cristiano. Nosotros como cristianos vivimos en un ambiente hostil.  Debemos estar dispuestos a pagar un precio para seguir a nuestro Maestro. El Apóstol Pedro sabía lo que era sufrir por el nombre de Cristo. Él escribió estas palabras a los creyentes en Cristo que fueron esparcidos en diferentes lugares debido a su fe en el Salvador. Seamos también animados y retados por sus palabras: “¹⁴ Si se te reprocha el nombre de Cristo, bendito eres tú, porque el espíritu de gloria y de Dios descansa sobre vosotros.^[a] Por su parte es blasfemado, pero por su parte es glorificado. ¹⁵ Pero que ninguno de ustedes sufra como un asesino, un ladrón, un malhechor, o como un entrometido en los asuntos de otras personas. ¹⁶ Sin embargo, si cualquiera sufre como cristiano, que no se avergüence, pero que glorificara a Dios en este asunto”1 Pedro 4:14-16 Nueva Versión Internacional (NVI). 

• Lo que da la identidad a los cristianos es Cristo mismo. Él y la salvación en Él dieron una razón para vivir y la confianza en la cara de la muerte a los de la iglesia primitiva. Esta verdad es comunicada por el mismo Apóstol Pablo y recuerda nuestro lugar en Cristo: “Si entonces te criaste con Cristo, busca aquellas cosas que están arriba, donde está Cristo, sentada a la diestra de Dios. ² Ponga su mente en las cosas de arriba, no en las cosas en la tierra. ³ Porque tú moriste, y tu vida está escondida con Cristo en Dios. ⁴ Cuando Cristo Quién es nuestra vida aparece, entonces usted también aparecerá con él en la gloria. Colosenses 3:1-4 Nueva Versión Internacional (NVI).   

• Los creyentes ganan la valentía y la fuerza para permanecer fieles al Señor Jesús mientras se juntan en comunidad. El escritor del libro de Hebreos recordó a los creyentes perseguidos de su necesidad el uno del otro y nos llama también a sacar fuerza de nuestros hermanos y hermanas en Cristo: “²³ Vamos a celebrar rápidamente la confesión de Nuestra esperanza sin vacilar, porque el que prometió Es Fiel. ²⁴ Y nos vamos a considerar unos a otros con el fin de revolver el amor y las buenas obras, ²⁵ no renunciar a la Junta de nosotros mismos, como Es la forma de algunos, pero exhortando a unos a otros, y tanto más como se ve el día se acerca.” Hebreos 10:23-25 Nueva Versión Internacional (NVI). 

• Nuestro poder para vencer y hacer un impacto en el mundo en el que vivimos es el amor. La noche anterior a su crucifixión Jesús dio a sus discípulos un nuevo mandamiento. Este mandamiento también permanece válido para nosotros en 2023: “ ³⁴ Este mandamiento nuevo les doy: que se amen los unos a los otros. Así como yo los he amado, también ustedes deben amarse los unos a los otros. ³⁵ De este modo todos sabrán que son mis discípulos, si se aman los unos a los otros. ” Juan 13:34-35 Nueva Versión Internacional (NVI).    

• Como creyentes descubrimos la gloriosa realidad de que no hay manera de perder en la vida. Para los cristianos del primer siglo el vivir era Cristo y el morir era ganancia. Pablo sabía que su vida tenía un propósito sin importar el sufrimiento que tenía que soportar, pero también sabía que una eternidad gloriosa le esperaba en el cielo en presencia de Cristo mismo. De una prisión romana él escribió estas palabras a los cristianos de Filipos: “²¹ Porque para mí el vivir es Cristo y el morir es ganancia. ²² Ahora bien, si seguir viviendo en este mundo^[a] representa para mí un trabajo fructífero, ¿qué escogeré? ¡No lo sé! ²³ Me siento presionado por dos posibilidades: deseo partir y estar con Cristo, que es muchísimo mejor ^“Filipenses 1:21-23 Nueva Versión Internacional (NVI). Que estas palabras del apóstol Pablo nos recuerden que en Cristo podemos afrontar el presente y el futuro con confianza. Recuerden en Cristo que no podemos perder:  “Porque para mí, el vivir Es Cristo, y el morir Es ganancia “. Filipenses 1:21 Nueva Versión Internacional (NVI)

Mientras consideramos estas verdades importantes, ¿cómo debemos responder?” Nuestra conducta debe ser digna del Evangelio de Cristo para que los que observen nuestra vida puedan ver un testimonio claro que les señala el camino a Cristo. También, necesitamos juntarnos en unidad, trabajando para la proclamación del Evangelio. Tampoco debemos tener temor de nuestros adversarios, pero en cambio tener confianza por razón de la presencia de nuestro Señor todo-confiable y la certeza de una vida gloriosa con Él para toda la eternidad. Sin duda nos tocará enfrentar tiempos difíciles en nuestro andar con Cristo, pero sabemos que mayor es el que está en nosotros, que el que está en el mundo. El mismo Señor que sostuvo y que dio poder a los cristianos primitivos nos sostiene y nos da poder mientras andamos con el Señor Jesús en 2023.

Another Look at God’s Thermals

“Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth does not become weary or tired. His understanding is inscrutable.
²⁹ He gives strength to the weary, and to him who lacks might He increases power.
³⁰ Though youths grow weary and tired, and vigorous young men stumble badly,
³¹ Yet those who ^[a]wait for the Lord will gain new strength; they will ^[b]mount up with ^[c]wings like eagles, they will run and not get tired, they will walk and not become weary.” Isaiah 40:28-31 New American Standard Bible (NASB).

This morning in my Quiet Time Bible Reading I read Isaiah 40-42 and was again spoken to by God’s marvelous promises. Isaiah 40:28-31 are verses that we often meditate on and are a source of great strength. Previously I wrote an article entitled “God’s Thermals”. It is based on these verses from Isaiah 40 and was inspired by observing the Andean Condor in southern Peru. Again I was blessed as I meditated on these marvelous verses and felt that it could be helpful for others to publish again my reflection on them.  I do not know what challenges you are facing in your life, but I pray you will be strengthened and encouraged as you take a fresh look at God’s Thermals.  

Several years ago Beth and I and a dear Peruvian friend visited Colca Canyon in southern Peru. It is a canyon of the Colca River and is located about 100 miles northwest of Arequipa. With a depth of 10,730 feet, it is one of the deepest canyons in the world. The canyon landscape comprises a green valley and remote traditional villages with terraced agriculture that predates the Incas.  It is a habitat for the giant Andean Condor, on view from overlooks like Cruz del Condor. It was the Andean Condor that most captured our attention during our visit to Colca Canyon.

As we were preparing to leave our hotel the morning of our journey to Colca Canyon our guide explained to us that we might see only one or two condors, or it could be possible that we would not see any. However, that was not to be the case. Our guide, Saul, gave us some background information about the Andean condor. They are known for their ability to soar. This is due largely to two things. The adult bird has a wing span of up to ten feet and this couples with the second factor to enable them to soar. About 8:30 to 9 a. m., as the day begins to heat up, drafts of warm air called thermals begin to form. The condors extend their wings and catch the thermals, thus enabling them to soar in an impressive way. That day we were able to see a number of the Andean Condors; Beth captured eleven in one photo. We were absolutely fascinated as we watched them effortlessly soar about the canyon.

As we watched the condors the Lord gave me spiritual memory and caused me to ponder the words penned by the Prophet Isaiah in Isaiah 40:28-31 he does not talk about condors but rather about eagles, but the spiritual truth is the same. We often grow tired and discouraged and stumble as we journey through life. But God’s Word promises us that if we wait on the Lord, that is, put our trust deeply in Him, we will gain new strength. Our Lord will provide us a thermal and cause us to soar. We will be able to run and not get tired, to walk and not become weary.

I do not know what you are facing in life that is causing you to become weary or to be discouraged. But I suggest to you that you can gain new strength, even soar. Extend your wings and catch His thermal. Wait on the Lord; trust deeply in Him and remain faithful in your walk with the Lord. As we wait on the Lord we are promised that we will gain new strength, we will mount up with ^[c]wings like eagles, we will run and not get tired, and we will walk and not become weary. What a wonderful promise!

Otra Mirada a Los Termales de Dios

“²⁸ ¿Acaso no lo sabes? ¿Es que no lo has oído? El Dios eterno, el Señor, el creador de los confines de la tierra no se fatiga ni se cansa. Su entendimiento es inescrutable. ²⁹ El da fuerzas al fatigado, y al que no tiene fuerzas, aumenta el vigor. ³⁰ Aun los mancebos se fatigan y se cansan, y los jóvenes tropiezan y vacilan, ³¹ pero los que esperan en el^[a] Señor renovarán sus fuerzas; se remontarán con alas^[b] como las águilas, correrán y no se cansarán, caminarán y no se fatigarán.” Isaías 40:28-31 La Biblia de las Américas (LBLA).

Esta mañana en mi tiempo devocional leí Isaías 40-42 y nuevamente me impactaron las maravillosas promesas de Dios. Isaías 40:28-31 son versículos en que muchas veces meditamos y siempre nos fortalecen. En otra ocasión publiqué un artículo titulado “Los Termales de Dios”. Se basa en estos versículos de Isaías 40 y fui inspirado por haber observado el Cóndor Andino en el sur del Perú. De nuevo recibí bendición de haber meditado en estos maravillosos versículos, y pensaba que sería de ayuda para otros que publicara otra vez mi reflexión sobre ellos. No sé los desafíos que usted está enfrentando en su vida, pero mi oración es que “Otra Mirada a Los Termales de Dios” sea usado por el Señor para fortalecerle y animarle.

Algunos años atrás Beth y yo y una amiga peruana visitamos el Cañón de Colca en el sur del Perú. Es un cañón del Río Colca y se radica unos 160 kilómetros al noroeste de Arequipa. Con una profundidad de 3.270 metros, es uno de los cañones más profundos del mundo. El panorama del cañón comprende un valle verde y aldeas retiradas con andenes agrícolas que preceden los Incas. Es un hábitat para el gran Cóndor Andino, que se ven desde miradores como la Cruz del Cóndor. Era el Cóndor Andino que más nos llamó la atención durante nuestra visita al Cañón de Colca.

Mientras que estábamos preparándonos para salir del hotel para nuestro viaje al Cañón de Colca nuestro guía nos explicó que quizá pudiéramos ver solo uno o dos cóndores, o sería posible no ver ni uno. Sin embargo, eso no era el caso para nosotros. Nuestro guía, Saúl, nos dio alguna información acerca del Cóndor Andino. Se conocen por su habilidad de remontarse. Eso se debe a dos cosas principales. El ave adulta tiene una extensión de alas de hasta tres metros y esto combina con el

segundo factor para hacer posible que se remonten con tanta facilidad. Cómo a las 8:30 a 9 a. m., mientras la mañana comienza a calentarse, corrientes de aire caliente que se llaman termales se producen. Los cóndores extienden sus alas y cogen los termales haciendo posible que puedan remontarse en una manera impresionante. Ese día era posible que viéramos un buen número de los Cóndores Andinos; Beth capturó once de ellos en una sola foto. Estábamos absolutamente fascinados mientras los observamos remontarse sobre el cañón.

Durante el tiempo que contemplamos los cóndores el Señor me trajo una memoria espiritual y me hizo recordar las palabras escritas por el Profeta Isaías en Isaías 40. En Isaías 40:28-31 el Profeta no habla de cóndores sino de águilas, pero la verdad espiritual es la misma. Muchas veces nos cansamos y nos desanimamos y tropezamos en nuestro andar con Cristo. Pero la Palabra de Dios nos promete que, si esperamos en el Señor, o sea, confiamos totalmente en Él, renovaremos las fuerzas. Nuestro Señor nos proveerá un termal para hacernos remontar. Podremos correr y no cansarnos, caminar y no fatigarnos.

Yo no sé lo que usted está enfrentando en la vida que le esté causando a cansarse o desanimarse. Pero, le sugiero que usted pueda renovar las fuerzas, aún remontarse. Espere en el Señor; confíe profundamente en Él para poder permanecer fiel en su andar con el Señor. Mientras que usted y yo esperamos en el Señor renovaremos nuestras fuerzas; nos remontaremos con alas como las águilas, correremos y no nos cansaremos, caminaremos y no nos fatigaremos. ¡Que promesa tan maravillosa!

The Word of God

Our son, Matt, and his wife, Louise, buy and sell antiques. They go to many different places to find the things that they want to offer for purchase in the booths they occupy in antique markets. A couple of years ago, shortly before Christmas, Matt spotted an item that he knew was the perfect Christmas gift for me. It was a lithograph with a prose/poem by an unknown author entitled “The Word of God”. I was overjoyed to receive it and deeply impacted when I read the reverent description that the author gives of God’s Holy Word. In this week’s article I share with you “The Word of God” by an unknown author.

The Word of God

This Book contains the mind of God, the state of man, the way of salvation, the doom of sinners, and the happiness of believers.

Its doctrines are holy, its precepts are binding, its histories are true, and its decisions are imitable.

Read it to be wise, believe it to be safe, and practice it to be holy. It contains light to direct you, food to support you, and comfort to cheer you. It is the traveler’s map, the pilgrim’s staff, the pilot’s compass, the soldier’s sword, and the Christian’s charter.

Here is Paradise restored, Heaven opened, and Hell disclosed. Christ is the grand object, our good its design, and the glory of God its end.

It shall fill the memory, rule the heart, and guide the feet. Read it slowly and frequently and prayerfully. It is a mine of wealth, a Paradise of glory, and a river of pleasure. It is given to you in life, will be opened in judgment, and remembered forever. It involves the highest responsibility, will reward the highest labor, and condemn all who trifle with its sacred content.

It will do us well to listen carefully to the author’s final sentence: “It involves the highest responsibility, will reward the highest labor, and condemn all who trifle with its sacred content.” As we finish 2022 and look forward to 2023 let us follow the example of Ezra and set our heart to study the Word of God, practice it, and teach what we learn to others.

La Palabra de Dios

Nuestro hijo, Matt, y su esposa, Louise, tienen un negocio de compra y venta de las antigüedades. Van a muchos lugares diferentes para encontrar las cosas que quieren ofrecer para comprar en los puestos que tienen en mercados de antigüedades. Hace unos dos años, mientras buscaban mercancía, Matt vio un artículo que sabía que era el regalo de Navidad perfecto para mí. Era una litografía con una prosa/poema de un autor desconocido titulado “La Palabra de Dios”. Me alegró mucho recibirlo y me impactó profundamente cuando leí la descripción reverente que el autor da de la Palabra Santa de Dios. En el artículo de esta semana comparto con ustedes “La Palabra de Dios” de un autor desconocido.

La Palabra de Dios

Este Libro contiene la mente de Dios, el estado del hombre, el camino de salvación, la perdición de los pecadores y la felicidad de los creyentes.

Sus doctrinas son sagradas, sus preceptos son vinculantes, sus historias son verdaderas y sus decisiones son imitables.

Léala para ser sabio, créala para estar seguro y practíquela para ser santo. Contiene luz para dirigirle, comida para sostenerle y consuelo para animarle. Es el mapa del viajero, el cayado del peregrino, la brújula del piloto, la espada del soldado, y el estatuto del cristiano.   

Aquí está el Paraíso restaurado, el Cielo abierto, y el Infierno revelado. Cristo es el gran objeto, nuestro bien su designio, y la gloria de Dios su fin.

Llenará la memoria, gobernará el corazón y guiará a los pies. Léala lentamente y con frecuencia y con oración. Es una mina de riqueza, un Paraíso de gloria y un río de placer. Se le da en la vida, será abierto en el juicio, y recordado para siempre. Implica la más alta responsabilidad, recompensará el trabajo más alto y condenará a todos los que se burlan de su contenido sagrado.

A Christmas Greeting from Tommy Larner

As we look forward to Christmas Day, we are excited to celebrate the birth of the Lord Jesus, the most important person in history! For those of us who have been born again, His birthday marks the beginning of our own redemption story. Grace is the greatest gift that humanity was given on that marvelous day when our Lord was born. We are all blessed by the original gift of Christmas. Join with me in letting the true light of Christmas shine bright through us, because we have received the greatest gift of all. We have an opportunity to live out a mission that began 2000 years ago. That mission is based on the amazing love made known in the Lord Jesus. I pray that you will be blessed by our most precious Christmas gift, and then pass on that blessing to those you encounter.

The Christmas season is a very busy time of the year. Our churches have many activities scheduled and we are occupied in preparing for family gatherings. I’m praying that you have a joyful and peaceful Christmas and that you are able to enjoy Christmas to the fullest! May your church experience be a special time of renewal as you ponder afresh the glorious truth that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. It is also my prayerful desire that you are able to enjoy meaningful time with family and friends as you celebrate Christmas.

It is my privilege to be your friend and fellow worker. I thank my God when I pray for you, because of the evidence of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for the People of God.  And I am praying that the expression of your faith will be even more effective as you understand and experience all the good things we have in Christ. Your love gives me much joy and comfort, for the Lord has used you to refresh my heart and the hearts of His people.

¡Mientras anticipamos la llegada del Día de la Navidad estamos emocionados de celebrar el nacimiento del Señor Jesús, la persona más importante de la historia! Para aquellos de nosotros que hemos nacido de nuevo, Su cumpleaños marca el comienzo de nuestra propia historia de redención. La gracia es el regalo más grande que la humanidad recibió en ese maravilloso día en que nació nuestro Señor. Todos somos bendecidos por el regalo original de la Navidad. Únase conmigo en hacer que la verdadera luz de la Navidad brille a través de nosotros, porque hemos recibido el mayor regalo de todos. Tenemos la oportunidad de vivir una misión que comenzó hace 2000 años. Esa misión se basa en el amor maravilloso que se da a conocer en el Señor Jesús. Mi oración es que usted sea bendecido por nuestro más precioso regalo de Navidad, y luego que transmita esa bendición a quienes usted encuentre.

Esta es una época muy ocupada en el año. Nuestras iglesias tienen muchas actividades programadas y estamos involucrados en preparar para las reuniones familiares. ¡Pido al Señor que tenga una Navidad alegre y pacífica y que pueda disfrutar de la Navidad al máximo! Que su iglesia experimente un tiempo especial de renovación al meditar de nuevo en la gloriosa verdad de que el Verbo se hizo carne y habitó entre nosotros. También es mi petición de oración que pueda disfrutar de un tiempo significativo con la familia y los amigos al celebrar la Navidad.

Es un privilegio ser su amigo y compañero de trabajo en el Evangelio. Doy gracias a mi Dios cuando oro por usted, por razón de la evidencia de su fe en el Señor Jesús y su amor por el Pueblo de Dios.  Además, estoy pidiendo a nuestro Dios para que la expresión de su fe sea aún más efectiva a medida que comprenda y experimente todas las cosas buenas que tenemos en Cristo. Su amor me da mucha alegría y consuelo, porque el Señor le ha utilizado para refrescar tanto mi corazón como el corazón de Su pueblo. ¡Que usted y sus seres queridos encuentren la verdadera felicidad y la paz esta Navidad y en el nuevo año!

Christmas A Time for Reflection

During this Christmas season it will be good for us all to pause and reflect on what really is the true meaning of Christmas. After the shepherds had been surprised by the appearance of an angel who declared to them the birth of the Savior, they went to Bethlehem and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby as he lay in the manger. They then declared what had been told them by the angel: “But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; ¹¹ for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is ^[a]Christ the Lord.” Luke 2:10-11New American Standard Bible (NASB). After hearing what the shepherds said Luke tells us how Mary responded: “¹⁹ But Mary treasured all these things, pondering them in her heart” Luke 2:19 New American Standard Bible (NASB). Mary the mother of Jesus was asking herself, “What does all this mean?” I believe it is good for us all to reflect on that question. What does the birth of the Lord Jesus really mean?

As we meditate on that question permit me to share some important conclusions.

God is interested in the world. He became flesh, making an identification with us as human beings. Jesus came to earth to save us from our sins, to put things in order and to guide us. He proved Himself to not be the far-off God but rather the God who has come near. Our situation is important to Him.

There is hope. Things can change. We as people can change and be transformed by God’s grace. The situations we live in can change. We can be more than conquerors through Christ.  The Master is at work to bring about His purposes in the world.

In the midst of all the hardness in the world there is love and tenderness. In the midst of all the hate there is love. As we see the babe laying in the manger, we see tenderness. When Jesus was with the children He displayed tenderness. As Jesus our Savor hung on the Cross He demonstrated supreme love.

We can know Christ personally. He came to make God known to us as human beings. It is also possible to personally know Him. “This is eternal life that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” John 17:3 New American Standard Bible (NASB).

Salvation is made available to all people. As the angel told Joseph Jesus was born to save us from our sins. The shepherds also received an angelic message declaring that the birth of this special baby was good news of great joy for all the people. Through the Lord Jesus salvation is provided for all peoples and tribes and tongues and nations. It is wonderfully stated by the Apostle John: “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” John 3:16 New American Standard Bible (NASB).

We are compelled to proclaim the message of Christ to all people. The message of the birth of the Savior is good news of great joy which will be for all the people. We cannot and must not remain silent. As the wonderful Christmas song proclaims “Go tell it on the mountain that Jesus Christ is born.” Let us announce – “For today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”

La Navidad Un Tiempo Para la Reflexión

Durante esta temporada navideña será bueno que todos pausemos y reflexionemos en el verdadero significado de la Navidad. Después de que los pastores fueron sorprendidos por la aparición del ángel quién les declaró el nacimiento del Salvador, ellos fueron a Belén y encontraron a María, José, y el bebé acostado en el pesebre. Al llegar allí ellos declararon lo que les dijo el ángel: “¹⁰ Pero el ángel les dijo: No temáis; porque he aquí os doy nuevas de gran gozo, que será para todo el pueblo:¹¹ que os ha nacido hoy, en la ciudad de David, un Salvador, que es CRISTO el Señor.” Lucas 2:10-11 Reina-Valera 1960 (RVR 1960). Después de escuchar lo que los pastores dijeron Lucas comparte cómo María respondió: “¹⁹ Pero María guardaba todas estas cosas, meditándolas en su corazón.” Lucas 2:19 Reina-Valera 1960 (RVR 1960). María la madre de Jesús estaba preguntándose, “¿Qué significa todo esto?” Creo yo que es bueno que todos nosotros reflexionemos sobre esa pregunta. ¿Qué significa verdaderamente el nacimiento del Señor Jesús?

Mientras que meditamos sobre esa pregunta, permítanme compartir algunas conclusiones importantes.

Dios se interesa en el mundo. Dios se hizo carne, identificándose con nosotros como seres humanos. Jesús vino al mundo para salvarnos de nuestros pecados, para poner las cosas en orden y para guiarnos. Él se manifestó no como un Dios de lejos sino como el Dios que se nos ha acercado. Nuestra situación sí le importa al Señor.

Hay esperanza. Las cosas sí pueden cambiar. Nosotros como personas podemos cambiar y ser transformados por la gracia de Dios. Las situaciones en que vivimos pueden cambiar. Podemos ser victoriosos en Cristo. El Señor está obrando para hacer Sus propósitos realidad en el mundo.

En medio de toda la dureza en el mundo hay el amor y la ternura. En medio de todo el odio hay amor. Al ver el bebé acostado en el pesebre podemos observar la ternura. Cuando Jesús estaba con los niños los trataba con ternura. Al ver Jesús colgado en la cruz vemos una clara demostración del amor supremo.

Podemos conocer personalmente a Cristo. Él vino para darle a conocer a Dios a la humanidad. También es posible que conozcamos en manera personal a Cristo. “Y esta es la vida eterna: que te conozcan a ti, el único Dios verdadero, y a Jesucristo, a quien has enviado.” Juan 17:3 Reina-Valera 1960 (RVR 1960).

La salvación está al alcance de toda persona. Como el ángel dijo a José Jesús nació para salvarnos de nuestros pecados. Los pastores también recibieron un mensaje angélico comunicando que el nacimiento de este bebé especial era nuevas de gran gozo para todo el pueblo. Por medio del Señor Jesús la salvación se ofrece para los de todo pueblo, toda tribu, toda lengua y toda nación. El Apóstol Juan lo dice en manera maravillosa: “Porque de tal manera amó Dios al mundo, que ha dado a su Hijo unigénito, para que todo aquel que en Él cree, no se pierda, mas tenga vida eterna.” Juan 3:16 Reina-Valera 1960 (RVR 1960).

Estamos grandemente impulsados para proclamar el mensaje de Cristo. El mensaje del nacimiento del Salvador es buenas nuevas de gran gozo a toda persona. No podemos quedarnos callados. Como el bello himno navideño proclama: “Ve, dilo en las montañas, que Cristo el Rey nació.” Anunciemos – “Que os ha nacido hoy, en la ciudad de David, un Salvador, que es Cristo el Señor.”

A Savior Is Born

Christmas is much more than a holiday. It is the celebration of the birth of a Savior, and that wonderful message must be proclaimed. The night of Jesus’s birth an angel appeared to a group of shepherds that were tending their flock in an area near Bethlehem. They were surprised by the angel’s announcement: ““Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. ¹¹ For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord” Luke 2:10-11 English Standard Version (ESV). In the very announcement the angel made to the shepherds we see why it is essential that we openly and boldly proclaim this message to the world. That dark night was filled with joy and light because a Savior was born. We must proclaim the message of Christmas because it is a message that brings good news. “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy…” We live in a dark and needy world and much of the news we receive is of a negative nature that often produces fear. However, the message of the Savior’s birth dispels fear and fills us with joy. God’s love and grace have invaded the world and are much greater than the darkness of sin.

When Jesus was born and lovingly placed in the manger and wrapped with swaddling cloths His life path was already headed toward the cross. Jesus was born on a dark night, but more importantly, He was born into a dark and sinful world. Isaiah prophesied the saving purpose of the Messiah: “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned – every one – to his own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all” Isaiah 53:6 English Standard Version (ESV). During our celebration of the birth of the Lord Jesus let us pause to ponder that when He was born, He came to die on the cross for our sins, and that through Him we have salvation. Both the birth of Jesus and His sacrificial death were part of God’s eternal plan. Joseph and Mary were legally committed to be married, but their relationship had not yet been sexually consummated. Therefore, as he was struggling with Mary’s pregnancy thinking that he would quietly divorce her, an angel appeared to him in a dream:” ²⁰ But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. ²¹ She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sin.” Matthew 1:20-21 English Standard Version (ESV). Jesus was born that through Him we might have salvation. So, as we celebrate this Christmas season let us remember that on this wonderful night a Savior was born. May we from a heart of gratitude exclaim, “Hallelujah what a Savior!” And with renewed commitment let us labor to take the message of salvation in Christ to those near to us and to all the peoples of the earth.

Un Salvador Ha Nacido

La Navidad es mucho más que un día festivo. Es la celebración del nacimiento de un Salvador, y ese maravilloso mensaje debe ser proclamado. La noche del nacimiento de Jesús un ángel apareció a un grupo de pastores que estaban cuidando su rebaño en una zona cerca de Belén. Fueron sorprendidos por el anuncio del ángel: “Mas el ángel les dijo: No temáis, porque he aquí, os traigo buenas nuevas de gran gozo que serán para todo el pueblo; ¹¹ porque os ha nacido hoy, en la ciudad de David, un Salvador, que es Cristoel Señor” Lucas 2:10-11 La Biblia de las Américas (LBLA). En el mismo anuncio el ángel hizo a los pastores ver porque es esencial que proclamemos abiertamente y con denuedo este mensaje al mundo. Debemos proclamar el mensaje de la Navidad porque es un mensaje que trae buenas noticias. El ángel enfatizó: “No teman, porque les traigo buenas nuevas de gran gozo…” Vivimos en un mundo oscuro y necesitado y la gran parte de las noticias que recibimos es de carácter negativo que a menudo produce temor. Sin embargo, el mensaje del nacimiento del Salvador disipa el temor y nos llena de alegría. El amor y la gracia de Dios han invadido el mundo y son mucho mayores que la oscuridad del pecado.

Cuando Jesús nació y su madre le envolvió en pañales y con ternura le acostó en un pesebre el rumbo de vida del bebé Jesús ya tenía dirección hacia la cruz. Jesús nació una noche oscura, pero más importante, Él nació en un mundo oscuro y pecaminoso. Isaías profetizó el propósito salvador del Mesías: “Todos nosotros nos descarriamos como ovejas, nos apartamos cada cual por su camino; pero el SEÑOR hizo que cayera sobre Él la iniquidad de todos nosotros” Isaías 53:6 La Biblia de las Américas (LBLA). Durante nuestra celebración del nacimiento del Señor Jesús pausemos a contemplar que cuando nació, Él vino a morir en la cruz por nuestros pecados, y que por medio de Él tenemos la salvación. Tanto el nacimiento de Jesús como Su muerte sacrificial eran parte del plan eterno de Dios. José y María estaban legalmente comprometidos para casarse, pero su relación todavía no se había consumado sexualmente. Por lo tanto, mientras José luchaba con el embarazo de María, y pensaba que le divorciara secretamente, un ángel le habló: “²⁰ Pero mientras pensaba en esto, he aquí que se le apareció en sueños un ángel del Señor, diciendo: José, hijo de David, no temas recibir a María tu mujer, porque el Niñoque se ha engendrado en ella es del Espíritu Santo. ²¹ Y dará a luz un hijo, y le pondrás por nombre Jesús, porque El salvará a su pueblo de sus pecados” Mateo 1:20-21 La Biblia de las Américas (LBLA). Jesús nació para que por medio de Él podamos experimentar la salvación. Entonces, mientras que participamos en esta temporada navideña recordemos que en esa noche maravillosa nació un Salvador. Exclamemos de un corazón lleno de gratitud, “¡Aleluya que Salvador más glorioso! “ Y con un compromiso renovado trabajemos para llevar el mensaje de la salvación en Cristo a todos cerca de nosotros y hasta la última parte del mundo.
