Thanksgiving

This Thursday, November 24th, Thanksgiving Day will be celebrated in the United States. It is a special day when family and friends gather together to enjoy each other and to share a traditional Thanksgiving meal. For those of us who are Followers of Jesus Christ every day ought to be Thanksgiving Day, but hopefully this Thursday we will set aside special time to ponder the many blessings we receive from our Heavenly Father’s gracious hand and express to Him our gratitude.

I am a man who is wonderfully blessed, and in this Blog I want to express thanksgiving for five specific things out of all the bounty that the Lord pours into my life.                                                                           

First, I am thankful for life. Life itself is a gift from God. In Acts 17 the Apostle Paul reminds us that, “In Him we live and move and have our being.” He grants me health and strength to meet the challenges and opportunities of each new day.  The Psalmist reminds me of the blessing that comes with each new day: “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it” Psalm 118:24 English Standard Version ESV. Even greater is the blessing of new life that I have in Christ Jesus. It truly is by grace that I have been saved through faith. I did nothing to deserve the salvation that I have in the Lord Jesus. It is God’s gift to me, so that I may not boast. I am saved from the penalty of past sin; the indwelling Holy Spirit works to save me from the present power of sin in my life; and I have the promise of Heaven where I will be saved from the very presence of sin. I can only say, “thank you my Gracious Lord!” It gives me great confidence to know that the Holy Spirit lives in me and I can look to Him for guidance and draw from His strength every moment of every day.;

In second place, I give thanks for my family. In 1969 I met a sweet and pretty young lady named Beth. Very soon she captured my heart and for 52½ years we have shared life together as husband and wife. Beth is God’s special gift to me and she is indeed my “rib”. It is a joy to walk together with her in life and ministry. The Lord blessed Beth’s and my union with three wonderful sons: Rob, Matt, and Joel. I continue to give thanks for Rob’s memory, who passed away in 2002, and I am deeply thankful to the Lord for Matt and Joel and for the loving sons they are. Our grandsons Caleb and Jake are another motive for gratitude to the Lord, and I am very thankful to be involved in their lives and for the privilege to intercede daily that they will be men of a different spirit who follow the Lord wholeheartedly.

Special friends are a third motive for my thanksgiving. My closest friends live in diverse places, ranging from Texas to South America. This small group of men know me for who I am and it is possible for me to talk with them about anything. They are godly men who pray for me and for whom I have the privilege to pray. “Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another” Proverbs 27:17 English Standard Version ESV. These dear friends sharpen my life.

In fourth place I give thanks for the marvelous Family of God. Beth and I have attended and served in churches in the United States, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico, and Peru. We have witnessed the Lord’s faithfulness expressed in the lives of believers in all of these places and we have seen Him bring new life into the lives of others in each of the churches where we have served. Our lives are richer because of brothers and sisters that we know in churches that are located in different places, reaching from rural Texas to the jungles of Peru. Many of these dear believers are our fellow soldiers as we labor together in the Lord’s service.

Finally, I give thanks for a life mission that has eternal value. When I was eighteen years old I realized that God was calling me to preach His Word. I was willing to follow Him but there was a tremendous obstacle for me to overcome. I was a stutterer. However, I knew God was calling me and I determined to obey Him. He proved to be faithful. I have preached thousands of messages in both English and Spanish. The journey in ministry has led Beth and me to serve for thirteen years as a pastor, for 31 ½ years as missionaries in Latin America, and now as an Associational Director of Missions in Southwest Texas. By His grace the Lord has used this unworthy servant to make an impact for His glory in places of which I would have never dreamed. For this I am humbled and deeply thankful.

Join me on Thursday in offering up thanksgiving to our Lord. Better yet, let us make every day Thanksgiving Day.

Se celebrará este jueves, el 24 de noviembre, el Día de Acción de Gracias en los Estados Unidos. Es un día especial cuando familiares y amigos se reúnen para disfrutar el tiempo juntos y para compartir una comida tradicional de Acción de Gracias. Para aquellos de nosotros que somos Seguidores de Cristo Jesús cada día debería ser el Día de Acción de Gracias, pero esperemos que este jueves separemos un tiempo especial para reflexionar sobre las muchas bendiciones que recibimos de la mano generosa de nuestro Padre Celestial y expresarle nuestra gratitud.

Soy un hombre maravillosamente bendecido y en este Blog quiero expresar acción de gracias para cinco cosas específicas entre las abundantes bendiciones que el Señor derrama en mi vida.

En primer lugar, estoy agradecido por la vida. La vida misma es un regalo de Dios. En Hechos 17:28 Nueva Biblia de loa Hispanos (NBLH), el Apóstol Paul nos recuerda que, “Porque en Él vivimos y nos movemos y existimos.” Me otorga salud y fortaleza para cumplir con los retos y oportunidades de cada nuevo día. El Salmista recuerda la bendición que viene con cada mañana: “Este es el día que el Señor ha hecho; regocijémonos y alegrémonos en Él” Salmo 118:24 Nueva Biblia de loa Hispanos NBLH. Mayor aún es la bendición de la nueva vida que tengo en Cristo Jesús. Es solo por la gracia que he sido salvado por medio de la fe. No hice nada para merecer la salvación que tengo en el Señor Jesús; es el regalo de Dios para mí, para que yo no pueda gloriarme. Soy salvo de la pena del pecado del pasado; el Espíritu Santo residente obra para salvarme del poder del pecado en mi vida ahora; y tengo la promesa del cielo donde seré salvo de la misma presencia del pecado. Sólo puedo decir, ”¡ gracias mi Señor misericordioso!” Me da gran confianza saber que el Espíritu Santo vive en mí y puedo buscarle a Él para que me dé la dirección y sacar de Él su fuerza para cada momento de cada día.;

En segundo lugar, doy gracias por mi familia. En 1969 conocí a uaa dulce y bonita joven, llamada Beth. Muy pronto ella capturó mi corazón y por 52 años y medio hemos andado juntos en el matrimonio.  Beth es el regalo especial de Dios para mí y ella es de verdad mi “costilla”. Es un gozo poder caminar juntos con ella en la vida y el ministerio. El Señor nos bendijo con tres maravillosos hijos: Roberto, Mateo, y Joel. Sigo dando gracias por la memoria de Roberto, quien falleció en 2002, y estoy profundamente agradecido al Señor por Mateo y Joel y por los hijos amorosos que son. Nuestros nietos Caleb y Jacob son otro motivo de gratitud al Señor. Estoy muy agradecido de estar involucrado en sus vidas y por el privilegio de interceder diariamente que sean hombres de un espíritu diferente que sigan al Señor de todo corazón.

Amigos especiales son un tercer motivo de mi acción de gracias. Mis amigos más cercanos viven en lugares diversos, desde Texas a Sud América Este grupo pequeño de varones me conocen cómo soy y me es posible hablar con ellos sobre cualquier cosa. Son hombres que aman al Señor y que oran por mí y por quienes yo tengo el privilegio de orar. “El hierro con hierro se afila, y un hombre aguza a otro” Proverbios 27:17 Nueva Biblia de loa Hispanos (NBLH). Estos queridos amigos afilan mi vida.

En cuarto lugar doy las gracias por la maravillosa Familia de Dios. Beth y yo hemos asistido y servido en iglesias en los Estados Unidos, Costa Rica, Ecuador, México y Perú. Hemos sido testigos de la fidelidad del Señor en las vidas de los creyentes en todos estos lugares y le hemos visto dar nueva vida a personas en cada una de las iglesias donde hemos servido. Nuestras vidas son más ricas debido a hermanos y hermanas que conocemos en las iglesias que se encuentran en lugares diferentes, que van desde lugares rurales de Texas hasta las selvas del Perú. Muchos de estos creyentes queridos son nuestros Compañeros de Milicia con quienes trabajamos juntos en el servicio del Señor.

Por último, doy las gracias por una misión de vida que tiene valor eterno. Cuando tenía dieciocho años de edad me di cuenta que Dios me estaba llamando para predicar Su Palabra. Yo estaba dispuesto a seguirlo, pero había un obstáculo tremendo que tenía que superar. Era un tartamudo. Sin embargo, sabía que Dios me estaba llamando y estaba decidido a obedecerle. Él siempre ha sido fiel. He predicado miles de mensajes tanto en el inglés como en el español. En el trayecto en el ministerio Beth y yo hemos servido durante trece años como pastor, 31 años y medio como misioneros en América Latina y ahora como un Director Asociacional de Misiones en el sudoeste de Texas. Por su gracia, el Señor ha usado este indigno siervo para hacer un impacto para su gloria en lugares que jamás yo hubiera pensado conocer. Por esto yo estoy profundamente agradecido.

Únanse conmigo el jueves en expresarle las gracias a nuestro Señor. Mejor aún, hagamos de todos los días un día de Acción de Gracias.

The Richness of a Daily Meeting With the Lord

At the age of nineteen God graciously led me to begin a spiritual discipline which has proven to be the foundation of my daily walk with Him. The Daily Quiet Time, a time of reading and meditating on the Word of God and spending time in prayer, has helped me grow in intimacy with the Lord Jesus and given me strength to face the many challenges in life. I cannot imagine the empty space that would be in my life if I did not have this time each morning to meet with my Lord.

Hudson Taylor, the founder of the China Inland Mission, is one of my missionary heroes. Brother Taylor was used by the Lord to develop a powerful missionary force to impact inland China with the Gospel. The following testimony gives insight to how he was able to maintain a close relationship with Christ that resulted in such a fruitful ministry. In April 1905, at the age of 73, Hudson Taylor made his last trip to China. Su esposa Jennie había fallecido, y él había pasado el invierno en Suecia. His wife Jennie had passed away, and he had spent the winter in Sweden. Su hijo Howard, que era médico, acompañado de su esposa, decidieron acompañar a Taylor en este viaje. His son Howard, who was a doctor, joined by his wife, decided to accompany Taylor on this trip. Al llegar a Shangai, él visitó el cementerio de Yangchtow, donde estaba sepultada su esposa María y cuatro de sus hijos. Upon arriving in Shanghai, he visited the Yangchtow Cemetery, where his wife Maria and four of his children were buried.

Mientras recorrían las ciudades chinas, Howard pudo comprobar el gran amor que todos le dispensaban a su padre, y también conocer cuál era el secreto de su prodigiosa vida espiritual. While touring the Chinese cities, Howard could see the great love that everyone expressed to his father, and also discovered the secret of his fruitful spiritual life. Para Taylor, el secreto estaba en mantener la comunión con Dios diaria y momentáneamente. For Taylor, the secret was to maintain communion with God both daily and momentarily. Y esto se podía lograr únicamente por medio de la oración secreta y el alimentarse de la Palabra. And this could be achieved only through secret prayer and feeding himself on the Word of God. Pero ¿cómo obtener el tiempo necesario para estos dos ejercicios espirituales? But how is it possible to get the necessary time for these two spiritual exercises? «A menudo, cuando tanto los viajeros como los portadores chinos habían de pasar la noche en un solo cuarto (en las humildes posadas chinas), se tendían unas cortinas para proveer un rincón aislado para nuestro padre, y otro para nosotros. This question can be answered by the example of Hudson Taylor.

Often, during this final trip to China Taylor, his son and his wife, and their Chinese porters had to spend the night in a single room in one of the humble Chinese inns. Curtains were hung to provide an isolated corner for Brother Taylor and another for his son and his wife. This demonstrated reality – not just preaching but practice.[i] In spite of having to face great challenges Hudson Taylor was able to make great impact for the glory of God through his life and ministry. Everything flowed out of his intimate relationship with the Lord Jesus. That intimate relationship was fueled by the time he spent with his Lord in the Word of God and prayer.

Certainly, my life and ministry have been very different from that of Hudson Taylor. But I have been greatly blessed to enjoy an intimacy with the Lord Jesus which can only be explained as His gracious gift to me. It is my conviction that the time I spend each day with Him in His word and in prayer opens my life to that intimacy and helps prepare me to live out my faith daily. My prayer is that each of you discover the riches that come from daily meeting with the Living Christ through reading and meditating on His Word and spending time with Him in prayer and that as a result your life will be increasingly fruitful for His glory.

La Riqueza de un Encuentro Diario con el Señor

A La edad de los diecinueve años Dios por Su gracia me guío a comenzar una disciplina que ha resultado en ser la base para mi andar diario con Él. El Tiempo Devocional Diario, un tiempo de leer y meditar en la Palabra de Dios y pasar tiempo en la oración, me ha ayudado a crecer en intimidad con el Señor Jesús y me ha dado la fortaleza para enfrentar los múltiples desafíos de la vida. No puedo imaginar el espacio vacío que habría si no dedicara este tiempo cada mañana para encontrarme con el Señor.

Hudson Taylor, el fundador de la Misión al Interior de China, es uno de mis héroes misioneros. Hermano Taylor fue usado por el Señor para crear una fuerza misionera poderosa para impactar el interior de China con el Evangelio. El siguiente testimonio nos hace entender cómo él podía mantener una relación cercana con Cristo que resultó en un ministerio tan fructífero.  En abril de 1905, a la edad de 73 años, Taylor hizo su último viaje a China. Su esposa Jennie había fallecido, y él había pasado el invierno en Suecia. Su hijo Howard, que era médico, junto con su esposa, decidieron acompañar a Taylor en este viaje. Todo fluyó de su relación íntima con el Señor Jesús. Esa relación íntima recibió su ímpetu del tiempo que él pasó con su Señor en la Palabra de Dios y la oración.

Por cierto, mi vida y ministerio han sido muy diferentes de la vida y ministerio de Hudson Taylor. Pero yo he sido grandemente bendecido en poder disfrutar de una intimidad con el Señor Jesús que solo puede explicarse cómo su don de gracia a mi vida. Es mi convicción que el tiempo que paso cada día con Él en Su Palabra y en la oración abre mi vida a tal intimidad y ayuda a prepararme a andar por fe cada día. Mi oración es que cada uno de ustedes descubra las riquezas que vienen de un encuentro diario con el Cristo Viviente por medio de leer y meditar en Su Palabra y pasar tiempo con Él en la oración y que su vida sea cada día más fructífera para Su gloria.

Our God Is a Promise Keeping God

^“43 Thus the Lord gave to Israel all the land that he swore to give to their fathers. And they took possession of it, and they settled there. ⁴⁴ And the Lord gave them rest on every side just as he had sworn to their fathers. Not one of all their enemies had withstood them, for the Lord had given all their enemies into their hands. ⁴⁵ Not one word of all the good promises that the Lord had made to the house of Israel had failed; all came to pass” Joshua 21:43-45 English Standard Version (ESV).

In my daily reading and meditation in the Word of God there is a powerful truth that is standing out to me. Our marvelous God is a promise keeping God. These are some of the basic truths that I have learned about our promise keeping God. First, He is a God who makes promises. His promises always are in tune with and express his eternal purposes. God’s promises call for our trust and obedience. As an expression of His divine integrity, God keeps His promises. Perhaps that which is most important is that the promises of God are perfectly fulfilled in the Lord Jesus.

Following are some of the struggles and needs in my own life and the promises that I am claiming from God’s Word.

Fear

“¹⁰ Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10 English Standard Version (ESV)

Anxiety

“⁴ Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. ⁵ Let your reasonableness^[a] be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; ⁶ do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. ⁷ And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:4-7 English Standard Version (ESV)

^“6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, ⁷ casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.” 1 Peter5:6-7 English Standard Version (ESV)

The need for God’s peace

^“3 You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you because he trusts in you. ⁴ Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock. Isaiah 26:3-4 English Standard Version (ESV)

 

Need for God’s direction

“³ Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.” Jeremiah 33:3 English Standard Version (ESV)

 

God’s answers to my prayers:

 “¹² “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. ¹³ Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” John 14:12-13 English Standard Version ESV

These are but a few of His precious and very great promises. My prayer is that we will learn to live in the richness of His promises and as we do may we come to know even more intimately our Promise Keeping God.

Nuestro Dios Es Un Dios que Cumple Promesas

En mi lectura y meditación diaria en la Palabra de Dios hay una verdad poderosa que se me ha resaltado. Nuestro Dios maravilloso es un Dios que cumple promesas. He aquí, hay algunas de las verdades básicas que he aprendido acerca de nuestro “Dios Cumplidor de Promesas”. Primero, Él es un Dios que hace promesas. Sus promesas siempre están de acuerdo con Sus propósitos eternos. Las promesas de Dios requieren nuestra confianza y obediencia. Como una expresión de Su integridad divina, Dios siempre cumple Sus promesas. Tal vez, lo más importante es que las promesas de Dios tienen su cumplimiento perfecto en el Señor Jesús.

A continuación, comparto algunas de las luchas y necesidades en mi propia vida y las promesas que estoy reclamando de la Palabra de Dios.

Temor: ^“10 No temas, porque yo estoy contigo; no desmayes, porque yo soy tu Dios que te esfuerzo; siempre te ayudaré, siempre te sustentaré con la diestra de mi justicia.” Isaías 41:10 Reina Valera 1960 (RV 60)

La ansiedad/preocupación:^“4 Regocijaos en el Señor siempre. Otra vez digo: !!Regocijaos! ⁵ Vuestra gentileza sea conocida de todos los hombres. El Señor está cerca. ⁶ Por nada estéis afanosos, sino sean conocidas vuestras peticiones delante de Dios en toda oración y ruego, con acción de gracias. ⁷ Y la paz de Dios, que sobrepasa todo entendimiento, guardará vuestros corazones y vuestros pensamientos en Cristo Jesús.” Filipenses 4:4-7 Reina Valera 1960 (RV 60)

Estas son solo algunas pocas de Sus preciosas y grandísimas promesas. Mi oración es que aprendamos a vivir en la riqueza de Sus promesas y mientras lo hacemos lleguemos a conocer en forma más íntima al Dios el Cumplidor de Promesas.

Encouragement for the Race/Ánimo Para la Carrera

To Write or Not to Write

July 5, 2017, I posted my first blog on the site, “Encouragement for the Race”. During much of the time since that date I have posted a weekly blog. However, some months ago I began listening to excuses in my head and became inconsistent in writing the weekly reflection. But, I have not been comfortable with not faithfully writing articles for “Encouragement for the Race”.  I have asked myself again why I believe that I need to write a blog. The answers to that question are answered in my first Blog post. Consequently, I return to share with you sentiments expressed in that first Blog.

There are so many blogs available to read and without a doubt many of those are written by people with much more experience and ability than I have as a writer. Why then should I write and publish a weekly Blog? As I ponder this question three key reasons come to mind. First, I feel that nudge from the Lord that comes from deep down within. There has been a sense of divine direction for some time and I haven’t responded to it and He has graciously continued to push me forward. Secondly, I believe the Lord has given me some ability to express myself through the written word, and it is now time to make the effort to write in a regular scheduled way. The third reason has to do with the title for my Blog Site, “Encouragement for the Race”. I do want to give encouragement for the race. As Christ Followers, we are involved in a race, not in a sprint but in a marathon. My deep desire and fervent prayer is to be an encouragement in a practical way to my fellow servants of the Lord to remain faithful and finish well in the race of the Christian life.

The Apostle Paul expresses the desire that I have as he describes the life and ministry of Philemon: “For I have come to have much joy and comfort in your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you, brother” Philemon 7 New American Standard Bible (NASB). Through his love and faith God had used Philemon to be an instrument of refreshment in the life of other Christians. My prayer is that the Lord will be pleased to continue to use this servant by the means of this blog to bring renewal and refreshment to fellow servants of our Lord.

Therefore, I recommit myself to write and publish “Encouragement for the Race”. I plan to post the blog by Thursday of each week. I will always publish the same content in Spanish. Please pray for me. This effort is a stretch for me, but one that I believe can be used by the Lord to bring glory to His name and blessing to the lives of other believers. Please make it a weekly practice to go to finishwellblog.wordpress.com and hopefully receive encouragement for your race.

Escribir o No Escribir

El 6 de julio de 2017 publiqué mi primer blog “Ánimo Para la Carrera” en la página web finishwellblog.wordpress.com. Durante mucho del tiempo desde esa fecha he publicado un blog semanal. Sin embargo, hace algunos meses comencé a escuchar algunas excusas que estaban en mi mente y dejé de escribir en forma constante la reflexión semanal. Pero, no he estado cómodo con no seguir escribiendo los artículos para “Ánimo Para la Carrera”. Me he preguntado nuevamente por qué pienso que necesito escribir un Blog. Las contestaciones a esta pregunta se contestan en el primer Blog que publiqué. Consecuentemente, vuelvo a compartirles algunos sentimientos de ese primer Blog.

¿Por qué pienso que necesito escribir un blog? Hay tantos blogs disponibles para leer; sin duda alguna, muchos de ellos están escritos por personas con más experiencia y capacidad como escritores que tengo yo. Mientras que reflexiono sobre esta pregunta, hay tres razones que se me vienen a la mente. Primero, siento ese empujón del Señor que viene desde lo profundo de mi ser. Ha habido tal sentido de dirección divina por un buen tiempo y no he respondido a ello hasta ahora. En Su gracia el Señor ha continuado empujándome hacia adelante. En segundo lugar, creo que Dios sí me ha dado cierta habilidad para expresarme por medio de la palabra escrita, y ya es hora de hacer el intento de escribir en forma disciplinada y regular. La tercera razón tiene que ver con el título de mi sitio de blog, “Ánimo Para la Carrera”. Yo sí deseo dar ánimo para la carrera. Como seguidores de Cristo sí estamos participando en una carrera, no en un sprint sino en una maratón. Mi deseo profundo y oración ferviente es animarlos a mis consiervos del Señor a permanecer fieles y terminar bien la carrera de la vida cristiana.

El Apóstol Pablo expresa el deseo que tengo en su descripción de la vida y ministerio de Filemón: “Pues tenemos gran gozo y consolación en tu amor, porque por ti, oh hermano, han sido confortado los corazones de los santos” Filemón 7 Reina Valera 1960 (RVR60). Por medio de su amor y fe Dios había usado a Filemón para confortar, o sea, refrescar la vida de otros cristianos. Mi oración es que el Señor se complazca en usar este siervo por medio de este blog para refrescar y renovar el ánimo de mis consiervos en el evangelio.

Por lo tanto, me comprometo de nuevo escribir y publicar “Ánimo Para la Carrera”. Propongo publicar el Blog no más tardar que el jueves de cada semana. Siempre publicaré el artículo tanto en el inglés como en el español. Por favor oren por mí. Este esfuerzo es un gran desafío, pero algo que creo será usado por el Señor para traer gloria a Su nombre y ser de bendición en la vida de otros creyentes. Por favor vaya cada semana a la página web de finishwellblog.wordpress.com y por la gracia de nuestro Buen Señor recibir ánimo para su carrera.
